Why was such a platform established?
The studies on Islamic thought in psychology began with the aim of seeking answers to some fundamental questions. These fundamental questions are as follows:
- As Muslims working in the field of mental health, why should we be interested in Islamic thought?
- Does a school of psychotherapy exist within the Islamic tradition, and if not, can one be established?
As the responses to these fundamental questions develop, new questions have emerged. These questions include the following:
- As Muslims working in the field of mental health, how do we define ourselves?
- What concepts do we use to explain our daily challenges, personal issues, points of stagnation, and shortcomings?
- What intervention techniques do we apply to ourselves or to the people in our environment?
- How related or unrelated are these techniques to the akaid of our religion?
- Can we consider a person’s intervention in their own mental world apart from the values they hold?
We carry the responsibility of wondering what the religion, in which we believe and have faith in its creed, may have said about the human mind and behavior, and how these might affect our practical lives. The answers we give ourselves and the motivation that initiates the process are shaped by this responsibility.
Everyone can ask these questions on their own. We assume that many of you are currently experiencing, have previously experienced, or will experience a similar process by asking these questions.
In addition to these personal efforts, there is a very clear answer to the questions, “Why should a platform be established?” and “Why should those asking these questions come together?”: “Muslims are like the stones that make up a strong fortress.” Therefore, we believe that we can find the answers to these questions together in solidarity. We believe again that we can produce valuable and powerful knowledge together. If we can learn to work together while trying to change our own lives, we aim to be helpful to others as well.
We felt the need for such a platform, both to come together in practice and to help new students avoid the shortcomings we faced when we were students. Thus, The Platform of Psychology in Islamic Thought was established with these questions, efforts and intentions.
