The Third Session of the Psychology in Islamic Intelectual Tradition 2024 Seminars Was Held

The third session of the Psychology in Islamic Intellectual Tradition seminar series was held on Thursday, May 2, at Istanbul University’s Prof. Fuat Sezgin Congress and Culture Center. As part of the event, Dr. Taha Burak Toprak delivered a presentation titled ‘’A Multidimensional Approach to Reality ‘’. 

The limitations of a one-dimensional understanding of reality, based on materialist foundations and grounded in the philosophy of science, were emphasized. Dr. Toprak, considering a single reality framework as a narrow paradigm, highlighted the potential opportunities that a multidimensional understanding of reality in Islamic intellectual tradition could provide for psychotherapy practices in various contexts. It was emphasized that, when done with the right methods, all dimensions can offer us opportunities regarding reality. 

The seminar ended with responses to the participants’ questions about the topic.

“What kind of relationship can we establish with the current science of psychology and its knowledge?” 

“What are the responsibilities of the different relationship styles we establish?”, 

“What does Islamic Thought tell us, in many areas such as the foundations of psychology, developmental theory, cognitive science, social psychology in the context of the philosophy of science?”

 “In the Islamic tradition, can a psychotherapy model be formulated from the theoretical structures regarding human beings, and if so, how?” 

“Could new aspects be considered regarding social treatment models?”
